Open letter to a Northern European...
Hello
from Athens and thank you for asking me how I’m doing in this
mess. We walk in the
streets. We buy fruits from the greengrocer. We listen to the radio and watch football. We are doing a thousand useful and
useless things and thinking a thousand useful and useless thoughts – each and every
one of us… things that will never be reported on the front pages of the major international
newspapers and in the headlines of the major international TV channels. Big
Media, actually, is expecting to break
the Big News on the results of the Greek
election. The Big News is called the “Grexit”. Which means, according to the
experts, a total collapse for Greece and an eventual collapse for the Eurozone.
It’s
a period of economic crises and prolific in
neologisms. “Grexit” is the latest buzzword. But here, for the time being, we are recycling
old concepts and words. For example, the words “plot” and “guinea pig”. More
and more people are convinced that Greece is the “guinea pig” of the other countries in the
Eurozone, especially Germany, which in turn represents the cruel hand of neoliberal
neocolonial Global Capitalism. You would aks may be, like me, why they did choose Greece and not another
country? Why, in countries such as Iceland, which has already collapsed, did they
not consider themselves “guinea
pigs”? Because, perhaps they do not feel so unique. What I
have understood, though, is the fact that if you are convinced to belong to a
supra-unique nation then you can easily imagine yourself as a guinea pig: that’s
a victim.
As
for the “conspiracy theorist”. Right-wing and extreme right wing parties want to win the elections so as to prevent the “communists” from coming into
power. They hate foreign immigrants, love Greece and declare to be 200% in
favor of “Europe”. Truthfully, looking at their faces and listening to their
words, I’m afraid not only for Greece but for all of Europe as well.
As
for the Left, they also promote a “conspiracy theory”: the “Grexit” you’re
talking about under rain, there in the European North, is more than a
catchphrase : it’s blackmail. According
to this theory, the members of the Eurozone have a passion for extreme games.
In
few words, Eurozone is in a crossroad. Greece looks like someone walking drunk
and careless in the middle of the street and then hit by a car. She lays now in
the corner of the street and in the brink of abyss. The Right Wing party -
which is becoming more and more extreme Right without wings - promises that in
case it wins the elections it will heal the wounds and keep Greece in the Eurozone by
killing all the foreign drivers. The Left promises
something like a Long March - which reminds that of Mao Zetung - in order to escape from the hands of cruel Global Capitalism – a march which
will be funded by the Eurozone which is a club of Capitalists. The allies in the
Eurozone, disconcerted and disoriented, looking at the spreads and their own
asses, tell that Greece should learn to walk properly by their side.
In any case we all are waiting for the elections. Trying to think rationally. Walking side by side with beggars and homeless. Hoping that tomorrow we will not find ourselves jobless. We won’t be stubbed from the neo – Nazi. Drinking coffee with those saying that they have nothing else to loose. Walking side by side with those who behave like spoiled losers. We are doing a thousand useful and useless things and thinking a thousand useful and useless thoughts – each and every one of us… things that will never be reported on the front pages of the major international newspapers and in the headlines of the major international TV channels...
